The Ali Mehdi Young Writers’ Competition is intended at, aside from the support of young aspiring writers with a platform from which to showcase their literary work, the commemoration of the memory of Omani poet and writer Ali Mehdi (1978-2008).
Ali Mehdi’s passion was writing. He strongly believed in the power of the pen to make a difference in the world. As such, there could not have been a more befitting way of cherishing Ali’s dreams and enthusiasm than to support young souls with sky-high dreams and aspirations to become published writers.
Sponsored by the support received from the National Youth Commission and proceedings from Ali Mehdi’s published poetry collections: Rapidly Blue (2002), Wonderous World (2005), In the Dimmest of Light (2008) and the Arabic publication of a collection of his poetry translated into Arabic (2010) تجولت وحيداً مثل سحابة (translating into I Wander Alone as a Cloud) (2010)- both published posthumously after his passing, the Competition invites creative writing entries from all aspiring young writers in the age group (14 to 24) to take part in the Competition’s three literary categories, namely Poetry, Short Stories and Essay.
Competition has been running annually since 2014 and continues to grow each year with wider interest and participation from Omanis and residents of Oman. The current Sixth Cycle of the competition is now open. The deadline for submission is 31st May 2020.
